A Bit About Us

Empowerment-Focused

We work to empower individuals and communities through human rights education, cultural awareness, and crime prevention initiatives. Our mission is to strengthen communities by promoting dignity, equality, and respect for the rights of all people.

We provide educational programs, workshops, and community initiatives that raise awareness about human rights, social justice, and the importance of safe, inclusive communities. By working with youth, families, and community leaders, we promote positive alternatives to crime, encourage civic responsibility, and build the skills needed to resolve conflicts peacefully.

Through cultural engagement, mentorship, and community partnerships, we help individuals understand their rights, develop leadership capacity, and become active contributors to safer and more resilient communities both locally and globally.

We believe that when people understand their rights and feel empowered to participate in their communities, they become powerful agents of positive change.

Impact & Urgency

Regional Impact:

Through partnerships with community organizations across Canada, North-South Development Roots and Culture Canada delivers programs that strengthen cultural identity, empower youth, and provide direct aid to families. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Roots and Culture Canada, in partnership with the Social Planning Council of Ottawa (SPCO), provided financial assistance to help support Black seniors, single parents, and at-risk students across Canada. This initiative was designed to ease the economic challenges brought on by the pandemic and to ensure that vulnerable community members had access to essential resources during a critical time.

Following the 2021 earthquake in Haiti and the civil unrest after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, the organization worked with grassroots groups to raise vital funds and mobilize support, ensuring that regional and diaspora communities received the attention and resources to recover and grow. We came together with members of the Haitian community to share, listen, and support one another through a trauma-informed peer session that fostered healing, connection, and strength.

National Impact:

At the national level, North-South Development Roots and Culture Canada amplifies the voices of Black civil society by engaging with policymakers, universities, and advocacy groups. The organization emphasizes addressing systemic barriers, amplifying lived experiences, and advancing conversations on human rights and equity. By shaping these national dialogues, it contributes to lasting systemic change that benefits diverse communities across the country.

International Impact:

Internationally, the organization represents Canadian Black civil society at the United Nations, including the Permanent Forum for People of African Descent in New York City and Geneva, Switzerland. Its active participation in global human rights forums, advocacy for equity and recognition, and relief efforts in Haiti extend Canada’s commitment to justice, resilience, and global solidarity. Guided by the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, North-South Development Roots and Culture Canada continues to work alongside like-minded groups to advance global awareness of human rights.
